Theology and Sustainability

NEW ISSUE June 2009!

Word in the World is a unique, multi-disciplinary periodical produced by a team of graduate students in Concordia University's Department of Theology. It is dedicated to the many diverse aspects of scholarship and faith that shape the sphere of theological studies. We welcome scholarly articles, poetry, reflection pieces, fiction and visual art from students and faculty within the department. We also encourage submissions from the many disciplines of study both within and beyond Concordia's community, as these shed their own crucial light on theological concerns. We hope to promote the budding academic careers of university students by providing a forum for conversation with their peers, as well as with professionals engaged within the various fields of scholarly discourse.

To date, the department has published 5 issues, all of which are available from the Department of Theological Studies at a cost of $15.00 for the most recent issue, and $5 for all back issues.

New Issue! Sustainable Horizons...

The brand new issue of Word in the World explores some of the vital questions that arise when theological perspectives take on the currently passionately debated subject of sustainability. In its contemporary sense, sustainability has come to mean the capacity to indefinitely maintain a certain practice or condition. We generally use the term in an ecological context when we, for example, examine the continued ability of our ecosystem to maintain itself and its biodiversity into the future despite human interference. We hear the words 'sustainable development' being bantered around as a means of achieving the noble goal of meeting, "the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainability calls us to consider the consequences of our actions not just on the present but also on a future humanity. In this issue of Word in the World, we endeavour to challenge popular contemporary thinking, to confront the accepted range of our knowledge and experience and to expand our horizons so that they too may be sustainable.
